Frequently Asked Questions
The main purpose of the crocodile farm is to breed and raise nile crocodiles for their skin ,which when tanned can be turned into luxury leather products. Crocodile skin is one of the most exotic and expensive leathers on the market today. Equator Crocs Uganda Ltd. is the only exporter of crocodile skins in Uganda.
Crocodiles aren’t raised only for their skin;. Crocodile meat is a delicacy that high end restaurants are increasingly starting to serve. Crocodile meat is a healthy white meat that is high in protein, low in fat, and rich in Omega-3. Oil is also extracted from under skin of the nile crocodile and is used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, particularly in developing eczema treatments.
In addition to farming, Equator Crocs provides education and conservation services to ensure the protection of the nile crocodile. The farm is home to hundreds of nile crocodiles, ranging from hatchlings to 60 years.
The majority of the crocodiles on the farm have been raised from eggs collected from Murchison Falls National Park. The farm has a licence from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to purchase and collect eggs from Murchison Falls National Park. Eggs are then incubated, hatched, and raised on the farm. Equator Crocs Uganda also has a large breeding stock from which eggs will be produced, hatched, and raised on the farm. Equator Crocs Uganda Ltd is committed to conservation and protection of the nile crocodile.
The farm is also home to crocodiles that have threatened local fishing communities and private beaches. UWA has captured and safely relocated these crocodiles to the farm., whereas they otherwise may have been killed. Equator Crocs continues to receive these crocodiles from UWA.
By incubating and hatching eggs on the farm, where they are safe from predators and risks such as monitor lizards, monekys, and flooded banks, Equator Crocs is contributing to the greater survival of the species. Five percent of the hatchlings are released back to the wild.
We have received requests from the Wildlife Authority to house other species, such as the monitor lizard, which we are open to consider. The farm is also home to a number of wild animals that are attracted to the natural vegetation and lake shore. It is a bird watchers paradise with several species of birds sited both on land and the Lake Victoria.
The famous red tailed monkey is also a common visitor to the farm.
Equator Crocs Uganda is the only facility in the country where you can get up close to hundreds of crocodiles.
We provide educational tours where you can learn more about the nile crocodile (and if you’re lucky you may see them being fed!).
We also partner s with academia and researchers and host a number of university veterinary students and interns. For those who want to stay and enjoy our spacious and tranquil lakeside property we have a mini resort which features four individual cottages and plenty of space for camping.
We also have a restaurant where you can enjoy lunch overlooking the lake.
The crocodiles are fed a combination of chicken, protein rich silverfish (mukene), and beef.
Depending on the age, some daily some bi weekly.
We harvest our crocodiles at 3 years, however our breeding stock will stay for several years. Several of the larger crocodiles that have been rescued and relocated to the farm remain with us. With their long life span, they can easily outlive many human beings, living to over 100 years.
